Childcare Assistants

At Shournagh Childcare, our Childcare Assistants play a vital role in delivering a caring, safe, and stimulating environment for all children in our care.

Job Overview

Key Responsibilities

Provide attentive, high-quality care to children
Support nappy changing, toilet training, and feeding routines
Promote children’s safety, health, and well-being at all times
Assist your Room Leader in planning medium and long-term activities
Help plan and deliver daily and weekly activities
Set up the room for daily activities and maintain a tidy, child-friendly space
Supervise children indoors and outdoors
Maintain accurate child records including:
- Observations
- Medication administration
- Accident reports

Communication

Engage positively with parents/guardians during daily handovers
Raise any concerns about a child’s welfare to the Manager or Supervisor promptly

Compliance & Standards

Follow all Shournagh Childcare policies and procedures
Support implementation of Síolta and Aistear frameworks
Maintain high hygiene standards and carry out cleaning duties as required
Ensure all equipment is safe and in good condition
Be familiar with our Child Protection Policy

Professional Development

Attend staff meetings and training sessions when required
Follow the Curriculum Documentation Policy
Undertake other duties as assigned by the Childcare Manager or Supervisor

Room Leader / Supervisor

Our Room Leaders play a key role in shaping the day-to-day experience of children and staff at Shournagh Childcare. This leadership position involves planning, supervision, and mentorship, ensuring a nurturing and safe environment for all.

Job Overview

Core Responsibilities

Provide guidance, support, and supervision to staff, students, and volunteers
Mentor students on placement, offering verbal and written feedback
Develop and implement programmes in line with Síolta and Aistear frameworks
Ensure a safe, inclusive environment with attention to health needs (e.g. allergies, asthma)
Maintain accurate records: accidents, incidents, injuries, illness, medication
Build strong, respectful relationships with parents and guardians
Foster collaboration and open communication among team members

Team Leadership & Communication

Lead by example—be involved in all tasks, including cleaning, toileting, and supervision
Communicate openly and clearly with staff, offering feedback and support
Encourage team input on activities, routines, and observations
Delegate fairly and rotate responsibilities to maintain morale
Support staff professional development and confidence through mentoring

Programming & Planning

Lead the planning and documentation of educational programmes
Involve staff in observations and planning to promote team ownership
Maintain daily records and reflections to support each child’s development
Use a consistent process for observations and track each child’s progress
Take responsibility for ensuring high-quality educational experiences

Building Positive Relationships

Foster respectful, supportive relationships with all staff
Create a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere for children and families
Promote open communication with parents to build trust and involvement
Be a mentor and role model to less experienced staff members
